A number of PDP members who defected to join a competing political coalition are now rejoining the party, according to Umar Iliya Damagum, the party’s acting national chairman.
Damagum revealed the information Thursday during the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party in Abuja. He also underlined the PDP’s willingness to regain power in the general elections of 2027 and criticised the alliance as a failed political experiment.
State chairpersons, governors, federal legislators, and other important stakeholders from all levels of the PDP hierarchy attended the NEC meeting.
“Many who jumped on the coalition bandwagon have already returned to our fold. Some even claim they never left and merely attended a meeting. We accept their confessions without prejudice,” Damagum said.
He described the collaboration as “ill-fated” and pointed out that the reversal wasn’t just among PDP members, disclosing that some members of other parties who had joined the coalition had also returned.
Damagum also praised the legislators, governors, and state chairmen of the party for their steadfast devotion.
He praised the lawmakers for taking on controversial government policies and establishing a benchmark for state assemblies, and referred to the governors as the “backbone” of the PDP.
“The Peoples Democratic Party remains the only party that is not only poised and ready to take back power, but also the only party with the structure, national acceptability, and legacy capable of bearing the weight of this great national undertaking,” he declared.
He advised party members to concentrate on issues that would benefit the PDP and the Nigerian people, and to be sincere and united in their contributions during the NEC meeting.
“As we deliberate on the next steps for our great party, I urge us all to be of one mind, to speak truthfully, and to make wise recommendations without prejudice,” Damagum said.
