The passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari has prompted a response from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The group said in a statement after former Presidency spokesperson Garba Shehu confirmed Buhari’s death that the information was long overdue and vindicated its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who had maintained that Buhari passed away in 2017.

The organisation cited Kanu’s long-standing assertions about the nation’s leadership and demanded a more thorough examination of the political history of the nation from 2017 to 2023, according to IPOB spokesman Comrade Emma Powerful.

The group said that Kanu had questioned President Buhari’s health and public life as early as 2017, and that subsequent admissions by former government officials have sparked a renewed public discussion about those allegations.
IPOB stressed the importance of public accountability and asked Nigerians to consider the consequences of official silence on significant national issues, all the while avoiding overt allusions to conspiracy theories.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu spoke on sensitive matters that many dismissed at the time,” the statement read. “Recent developments only highlight the need for transparency and open dialogue in governance.”
“We believe this is a moment for the country to reflect on the importance of truth in leadership, and the consequences of withholding information from the public,” the group added.
In addition, the statement reaffirmed IPOB’s demand that Kanu be released from custody and urged for acknowledgement of his contribution to bringing attention to national concerns.

Though no official confirmation has been made on any of the most contentious rumours circulating, Garba Shehu’s comment acknowledging that President Buhari has endured significant health issues during his term has spurred considerable discussion online and in the media.
Despite not confirming any misconduct, observers have pointed out that the Shehu remark has sparked new demands for a thorough examination of leadership behaviour during that time.
