Jos-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, has strongly opposed recent calls by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang for the withdrawal of soldiers from flashpoint areas in the state, following their alleged inability to prevent repeated attacks.

Governor Mutfwang made the appeal during a visit to Jebbu Binde village in the Ta-Hoss District of Riyom Local Government Area, where over 30 people were killed on July 14 in an attack reportedly carried out by suspected Fulani militias. He urged the federal government to consider replacing the soldiers with mobile police units.

However, Sheikh Jingir, who also serves as the National Chairman of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), firmly rejected the proposal, warning that the withdrawal of military personnel from the affected areas could further endanger the lives and property of residents.

Islamic cleric who made his position known during a press conference in Jos on Tuesday, said he strongly rejects the call by the governor and called on the military, the State House of Assembly and other relevant authorities to reject the move.

According to the Islamic cleric, withdrawing the soldiers will not be beneficial to the state, neither will it bring the much needed peace nor stop the spate of attacks.

Islamic cleric stated that since the outbreak of violence in the state, the military has been doing its best to restore order and withdrawing them will escalate the situation and make it worse.

“We do not support the call to withdraw soldiers from flashpoints. We have confidence in all federal security agencies, including the police. We do not support the removal of soldiers or the police; rather, we support a combination of all security agencies, like Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), as a strategy by the federal government to achieve lasting peace in the state,” Sheikh Jingir stated.
