Former president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, is reportedly carrying on with plans to contest the 2027 presidential election, despite public disapproval from his wife and former first lady, Patience Jonathan.

At an event held in Abuja in May 2025 where she received the Women Icon Leader of the Year Award, Mrs. Jonathan complained about the pressures of holding public office saying: “The distress of Nigeria is so much that if God manages to bring you out of it, you should glorify Him. Why do you want to go back there? I need peace. My peace is enough.” She then went a step further to declare support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and promised to campaign for his re-election.

The former president, however, is not deterred by his wife’s condemnation of his goal and has instead stepped up plans to guarantee a smooth path to clinching the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket, according to various people within Jonathan’s circle who spoke to Daily Sun.

According to reliable information obtained by Daily Sun, his supporters—particularly those in his inner circle—have met multiple times outside of Nigeria. The purpose of some of these gatherings has been to strengthen his base of support within the PDP and come up with a strategy to deal with what they refer to as the “Nyesom Wike problem,” which is the dispute the PDP is having with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who told Jonathan in a media chat last Monday that he should not run for office but instead maintain his reputation as a statesman.

A source familiar with the information said, “Wike’s opposition cannot be taken lightly and that is why some of our meetings have been about how to ensure he does not become a stumbling block.” Jonathan’s team sees Wike’s remarks as a threat to his presidential aspirations.

According to information obtained, the former president wants his base of support within the PDP, which is led by Bala Mohammed, the governor of Bauchi State, to work towards eliminating any potential obstacles to his candidature as the party’s nominee for president in 2027.

Jonathan’s team also had to fight back against others who claimed that because he had been sworn in twice, he had no legal right to run for president again. They quickly put an end to the rumours about his eligibility by publishing a court ruling that declared he had a constitutional right to run for president.
