The Labour Party (LP) faction led by Julius Abure has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in and resolve the party’s internal crisis by holding Abia State Governor Alex Otti accountable for allegedly threatening Julius Abure, the party’s national chairman.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, Alhaji Umar Farouk, the Factional National Secretary of the Labour party, made the appeal. According to Farouk, Governor Otti recently demanded that Abure be arrested, which he characterised as an overreach and a flagrant disrespect for party authority.

“We are not only condemning this despicable action of the governor, who was recently suspended by the party, but are also seeking the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to persuade the governor from further threats to our party and its leadership,” Farouk stated.

Otti was charged by Farouk of planning several threats against party leaders in the previous few months. He related incidents when party leaders were supposedly detained at the governor’s direction.

Additionally, he said that Otti threatened Abure and the National Working Committee (NWC) at a meeting at Transcorp in Abuja, promising to put the labour party’s leadership through a “doomsday.”

The group led by Abure expressed shock over Otti’s recent media remarks in which he allegedly called Abure a “clown in search of a crown.”

In response, Farouk said, “As of 2022, when Governor Otti joined the Labour Party after being rejected by virtually every other political party, Abure was already the National Chairman—a king who made Otti what he is today. Otti, who has not added value to the party that made him, is actually the clown.”
