Security men storm Abia PDP meeting over unapproved gathering.
There was drama in Obingwa LGA of Abia State on Friday as a meeting organised by members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at a community square was abruptly relocated to another venue.
The relocation followed the sudden arrival of operatives from the Abia State combined security outfit, Operation Crush, at the scene.
Although the Operation Crush personnel neither arrested nor molested any PDP member, their silent presence caused the crowd to disperse in various directions before regrouping at a private location where the meeting resumed.
It was gathered that the PDP meeting was a fallout of a solidarity visit paid to the former Governor of the State, Okezie Ikpeazu, by his former appointees a day earlier.
A senior official of Obingwa LGA, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated that PDP did not obtain the necessary approval to hold the meeting in a public space, thereby posing a potential security risk.
He recalled that a regulation introduced by the immediate past administration had prohibited any political gathering in a public place without prior approval from the government.
However, the chairman of PDP in Obingwa LGA, Aham Egbulefu, insisted that his party had obtained approval before convening the disrupted meeting.
Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Otti, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, remarked that the organisers of the meeting “did not mean well for Abia State” but were merely engaged in “content creating auditioning.”
