Historic Moment! Namibia Welcomes First Woman President
Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has just today been inaugurated as the first female president of Namibia.
I am informed that Nandi-Ndaitwah, aged 72, won an election in November, attaining more than 57 percent of the votes cast. The Electoral Commission noted that the closest rival, Panduleni Itula, received 26 percent of the vote.
In this manner, she has come to join the small throng of female leaders in Africa after Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Joyce Banda of Malawi, and Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania.
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s swearing-in went down in the history books for Namibia as one of the most notable ones.
A former head of state and a current head of state were in attendance at the inauguration together with Nandi-Ndaitwah.
Nandi-Ndaitwah was sworn in 35 years after Namibia’s independence by outgoing President Nangolo Mbumba, 83.

In her inaugural address, Nandi-Ndaitwah vowed to boost Namibia’s economy, create jobs, and foster unity in a politically divided nation, mostly through employment opportunities in agriculture, fishing, the arts, and sports.
Namibia makes history as Nandi-Ndaitwah is sworn in as the country.
On her election as Namibia’s first woman president, she told SABC: “Of course we are breaking the ceiling, we are breaking the walls.
