National Grid Collapse: Nigerian Govt Exposes Root Causes

Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, declaimed that the state’s electric grid will always be on the verge of breakdown.

This was according to the Minister stating that they cannot repair the important transmission line in the northern part of the country as a result of which the government will not be able to carry out repairs owing to incessant insecurity in the region.

His statement emanated from the discussions on the defense of the budget for 2025 with the Senate Joint Committee on Power.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has said that the national electricity grid will remain prone to collapse.

According to the Minister, this was due to the government’s inability to repair a crucial transmission line in the northern part of the country owing to persistent insecurity.

Adelabu said this on Monday during the 2025 budget defense session with the Senate Joint Committee on Power.

That the Shiroro-Kaduna-Mando line was out of service since a vandalism incident in October 2024 has caused immeasurable loss to the nation, according to the Minister.

He cited that as one of the chief reasons for the frequent collapse of the grid in the country.

“The Kaduna-Shiroro-Mando line had been one of the two major lines transmitting power to the north.

“The other, the Ugwuaji-Makurdi line, had also been vandalized but has been restored.

“However, the Shiroro-Mando-Kaduna line remains down due to insecurity.

“This is why our grid is so fragile; it relies on a single line, and everything stresses it unnecessarily,” he added.

According to Adelabu, restoring the power quickly relies on collapsing the national grid.
