Niger Flood: Gov Bago orders closure of Mokwa IDP camp by June end

Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has ordered the closure of all Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Mokwa by the end of June, stating that the government is committed to provide flood victims more permanent housing options.

According to Governor Bago, who was in Mokwa to offer condolences to those affected by the recent flood calamity, the state government will no longer support extended stays in makeshift camps. Financial aid will instead be given to victims so they may find rental housing while they wait for the federal government to build permanent resettlement dwellings.

The new resettlement dwellings would be built by the federal government, he continued, while the Niger State Government would supply the land and other services to support quick growth.

“We would not encourage the establishment of more IDP camps in any part of the state. Therefore, the government has concluded plans to close down the Mokwa IDP camps,” the governor stated.

Bago instructed the Ministry of Lands and Survey to speed the building process by allocating land and issuing a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the federal government.

Ten truckloads of rice, beans, maize, millet, and sorghum will each be given to the displaced people by the state government as an immediate aid measure.
