Niger Republic Announced in a Charter that it has Switched its Official Language from French to Hausa
Following the takeover of the country’s administration, the Niger military government has announced the switch to make Hausa its official language.
This announcement was contained in a charter published in a special edition of the government’s official journal and released on March 31, 2025.
Although Niger Republic did not totally do away with French, their former national language, they instead chose to make it a part of the working language alongside English.
The statement reads, “The national language is Hausa,” and “the working languages are English and French.”
According to the residents, who also confirmed that Hausa is the most commonly spoken language. They even pointed out that the Zinder, Maradi, and Tahoua regions have it as their major language for communication.
However, Hausa was listed as its official spoken language; the Zarma-Songhay, Fula, Kanuri, Gourmanche, and Arabic were also listed as the other spoken languages.

This also comes after the Republic of Niger officially exited ECOWAS alongside Burkina Faso and Mali.
