Nigeria at 64: David Mark Calls for Unity, Reflection, and Action
As Nigeria celebrates its 64th Independence Anniversary, former Senate President, David Mark, has called for a period of deep reflection for the country’s leadership. In a goodwill message, Mark emphasized the importance of President Bola Tinubu and other leaders to introspect on the state of the nation, especially in the face of the persistent challenges of insecurity, poverty, disease, and underdevelopment.
David Mark’s statement was made through his Media Adviser, Paul Mumeh, where he expressed both concern and optimism for Nigeria’s future. Reflecting on the country’s journey so far, Mark admitted that while Nigeria’s current situation may be disappointing, it is also an opportunity to learn from past mistakes and work toward progress. He pointed to the country’s wealth of human and natural resources, emphasizing that these assets, if managed correctly, could turn Nigeria’s fortunes around.
In his message, Senator Mark didn’t shy away from acknowledging Nigeria’s turbulent history, including the 30-month civil war, ethnic and religious conflicts, and leadership failures that have contributed to the nation’s current state. He noted that these issues are not isolated incidents but are deeply rooted in the inadequacies of leadership and the failure of citizens to rise above divisions and work for the common good.
He issued a strong warning against the divisive rhetoric and ethnic tensions that have recently worsened the political atmosphere. According to Mark, those who exploit Nigeria’s ethnic and religious fault lines to promote hatred are enemies of the nation’s progress. He urged Nigerians to focus on unity and put an end to these divisive tendencies, stating that inflammatory statements only serve to deepen the already fragmented social and political climate.
Despite the hurdles, David Mark did acknowledge that progress has been made in some areas. He emphasized that while Nigeria may not yet be where it needs to be, the country is in a better position than it was in the past. This, he noted, should serve as a source of motivation for all citizens to keep pushing forward for a better Nigeria. He called on leaders, in particular, to put the well-being of citizens at the center of their policies and decisions, urging them to lead by example.
Mark is optimistic that Nigeria can overcome its current difficulties if the people are willing to forgive past grievances and work together for the nation’s good. He believes that unity, patriotism, and a shared mission are key to solving Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.
Additionally, David Mark advocates for increased investment in businesses and enterprises that can stimulate economic growth, increase national income, and curtail capital flight. He stresses the importance of creating an environment where every Nigerian, regardless of ethnic background or location, can thrive without fear of intimidation or discrimination. Mark called for Nigerians to always support one another, emphasizing the importance of being “our brother’s keeper.”
As the country reflects on its past and plans for its future, David Mark’s message is a reminder that while the road ahead may still be tough, Nigeria has the potential to rise above its challenges. It’s a call for unity, understanding, and action, with the hope that the nation can reach its full potential in the coming years.
