The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, has declared a nationwide strike on 4th February 2025 to protest against the 50 percent telecommunications services tariff hike in the country.

This is due to the outrage by Nigerians following NCC’s approval of the 50% increase by Telecoms.

Following this approval, NLC has planned a nationwide strike to shut down the country and demand that their needs be met, which includes a reduction from the 50% increase in telecoms tariffs.

The strike was decided on by the National Administrative Council (NAC) of the labor union.

in a statement by NLC’s President, Joe Ajaero, it partly reads, “This decision, coming at a time when Nigerian workers and the masses are grappling with unprecedented economic hardship, is a clear assault on their welfare and an abandonment of the people to corporate fat cats.”

The Congress said the decision to increase the tariff at this time is nothing short of wickedness. They stated that Nigerians are struggling to cope with the current economic hardship and inflation; the tariff increase will only make things worse.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian government is defending the increase, saying it is because of the current inflation rate, which stands at 34% as at December 2024.
