The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended train services on the Abuja-Kaduna route following a derailment incident that occurred on Sunday.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa confirmed the suspension, stating that operations will remain halted until investigations are completed and safety can be guaranteed.
Opeifa noted that technical teams from the NRC, the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), and other relevant agencies are currently at the scene to determine the cause of the derailment and implement necessary preventive measures.
He dismissed rumors that the derailment was due to poor maintenance, emphasizing that the NRC consistently complies with established safety protocols. He also announced that refunds have been processed for all passengers affected by the service disruption.

According to Opeifa, six passengers sustained minor injuries and have since received medical care. However, the total number of passengers on board at the time of the incident is still being verified.
Meanwhile, the NSIB has officially launched an investigation into the derailment as efforts continue to ensure the safe and timely restoration of train services on the corridor.
