President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Adetona, on Sunday, describing him as more than a traditional ruler, calling him a father figure and a staunch supporter of democracy.
Speaking at the 8th-day Fidau prayers held in honor of the late monarch at the Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Tinubu revealed that Oba Adetona played a key role in his rise to the presidency, a gesture for which he remains deeply grateful.
The President praised the late Awujale’s legacy, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to democratic values and national development.
Recall that Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, died last week at the age of 91.
The President who landed at about 12:45pm at the Ogun State Agro cargo airport, Ikenne proceeded to the Oba Adetona private residence, in Igbeba area to pay his final respect at the grave site.
Tinubu said, “Our history would not have been completed, if I failed at the last election. This is basically because of your support and prayers of the late Awujale. But today, he is no more.
“Baba was steadfast, resolute, and encouraging to the course of June 12 and democracy.
“The Oba Adetona was a leader of conscience, and tradition. We have named many institutions in his name, and his legacy will endure forever”, he added.
In his remarks, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, urged the people of Ijebuland to stick together and preserve the principles of harmony and peace promoted by the late Oba Adetona.
He exhorted everyone to follow the law and to respect the monarch’s legacy by acting with honour, dignity, and unselfish leadership.
Kamaldeen Bello, the Chief Imam of Gbagura, in his short sermon stated that everyone learns the value of life from death since it is inevitable.
“We will all taste death, so live as though today is your last”, he harped.
Dignitaries present at the prayers include, the Governors of Kwara, Ondo, Ekiti States, and the Deputy governors of Oyo state, and Lagos state, and ministers, amongst others.
