Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has voiced concerns over internal party loyalty, specifically pointing to the actions of Senator Dino Melaye during the recent Kogi gubernatorial election.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Damagum responded to remarks made by Melaye, who had referred to the PDP as a “once upon a time party.” The PDP Chairman did not hold back, attributing some of the party’s current challenges to Melaye’s behavior.
“Let me remind you about that statement credited to Dino. He’s part of the problem,” Damagum said. He highlighted Melaye’s run for governor in Kogi State, stating that the senator failed to even vote for himself during the election. “Put that on record: he didn’t go out to vote in his own election,” Damagum stressed, emphasizing what he saw as a lack of commitment to the party’s cause.
Damagum further questioned Melaye’s role in damaging the PDP’s image. He noted that anyone given the party’s platform is obligated to enhance its reputation and efforts. While acknowledging that elections come with both victories and defeats, Damagum said candidates must at least strive to lose “credibly,” rather than undermine the party’s standing.
Melaye has been suspended by the PDP over alleged anti-party activities (Read more), which has further fueled internal tensions within the party. His actions, coupled with Damagum’s pointed criticism, highlight the deepening rift and ongoing struggles within the PDP as it seeks to navigate its internal challenges.
