Shettima to Represent Nigeria at UN General Assembly 2024

At the request of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for the United States to attend the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The UNGA, scheduled for September 24–28, 2024, will focus on the theme: “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations.”

Shettima is leading the Nigerian delegation to the high-level global forum, as President Tinubu is concentrating on pressing domestic issues, including the recent flood disasters in Nigeria. During the session, Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, participate in various key meetings on the sidelines, and engage in several bilateral discussions with leaders and stakeholders.

Nigeria’s Role at UNGA and Economic Benefits
Vice President Shettima’s participation in the UNGA is crucial for Nigeria’s international engagement. This high-level global platform allows Nigeria to highlight its priorities, such as peacebuilding, sustainable development, and economic growth. By participating in bilateral meetings, Nigeria can strengthen international partnerships, attract foreign investments, and forge collaborations in critical areas such as infrastructure development, education, and climate action.

The economic benefits of such engagements could be substantial. Nigeria could gain access to funding opportunities for sustainable projects, foster stronger trade relations, and gain support from the global community in addressing critical issues like security, energy, and economic reforms. These efforts align with the Tinubu administration’s goal of boosting foreign direct investment (FDI) and fostering economic growth.

Key Themes at UNGA 79
With a focus on sustainable development and human dignity, the UNGA session provides an opportunity for Shettima to advocate for Nigeria’s interests on the world stage. Additionally, discussions surrounding global challenges like climate change, poverty eradication, and gender equality will take center stage, issues that are pivotal to Nigeria’s development agenda.
