George Agbakahi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and leader of the South East Tinubu Support Group, has stated that the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will play a significant role in shaping President Bola Tinubu’s chances of reelection in the South East.

Agbakahi made this remark on Friday during an interview on The Morning Show on Arise Television. He also highlighted the achievements of the Tinubu administration in the region, particularly in the area of infrastructure development.

“You know, the President has done a whole lot in respect of infrastructure development in the South East. Almost the major roads in the South East are now under construction. Go to Enugu-Onitsha road that has not been touched by previous administrations, it is under construction,” he said.

“Go to Enugu-Port Harcourt road, the same thing is happening; it’s working, a very important economic road. Aba to Ikot Ekpene that has not been touched for the past almost 18 to 20 years is currently under construction as we speak.

“The issue of South East Development Center Commission, SEDC, with 150 billion naira, you know, for them to use in economic development is working.”

Agbakahi, however, maintained that beyond infrastructure, the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu remains a critical political issue that could influence voter sentiment in the region.

“The president has done a lot in the South East, and the only area that I believe that is a major variable also in the South East is the issue of Nnamdi Kanu. That is a major variable that will also determine the election in the South East. And I’m quite sure that, as time goes on, our president is a father figure who understands the intricacies of politics and governance,” he added.
