Tinubu Changes National Anthem to ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed a bill to revert Nigeria’s national anthem from “Arise O Compatriots” back to the original “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the change during a joint session of the National Assembly, highlighting that the President would not be making a speech due to another engagement.
The bill, titled “National Anthem Bill, 2024,” was passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives within the past week. The original anthem, penned by Lillian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Berda, was in use from 1960 until it was replaced in 1978. The lyrics emphasize national unity and justice.
Lyrics of ‘Nigeria, We Hail Thee
Nigeria, we hail thee, Our own dear native land, Though tribe and tongue may differ, In brotherhood, we stand, Nigerians all, and proud to serve Our sovereign Motherland. Our flag shall be a symbol That truth and justice reign, In peace or battle honour’d, And this we count as gain, To hand on to our children A banner without stain. O God of all creation, Grant this our one request, Help us to build a nation Where no man is oppressed, And so with peace and plenty Nigeria may be blessed.
