Rivers: Tinubu meets Ibas ahead of emergency rule expiration slated for September 18

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), the state administrator, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday in preparation for the end of the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was suspended, is anticipated to return to office on September 18, when the emergency rule ends.

On the events of the meeting, the Presidency did not issue an official statement. However, reports indicated that they participated in discussions about next steps for Rivers state.

This exclusive closed-door meting is coming shortly after FCT minister, Nyesom Wike revealed that all was set for the suspended governor Fubara to return to seat.

Recall that in a countrywide broadcast in March, President Tinubu imposed a six-month suspension on the Rivers state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and every member of the House of Assembly.

He defended the action by pointing to the need to maintain peace and avoid the state’s governance collapsing, as stated in Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution.

Following the proclamation, Vice Admiral Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, was appointed as Administrator.

His mandate was to restore order, stabilise governance in Rivers state, and ensure continuity in public administration during the emergency period.
