Brig. Gen. Yushu’a Ahmed has just been sacked by President Tinubu as the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). He is being replaced immediately by Brigadier General Kunle Nafiu.
This may not have come as a shock to many Nigerians who accused the ex-NYSC DG of withholding payments of the new monthly wage of N77,000 to corp members.
Yushu’a Ahmed’s replacement, Brig. Gen. Nafiu, was the former Chief of Staff to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede. He also served in the same capacity with the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Abiodun Lagbaja.
Brig. Gen. Nafiu hails from Ileogbo, Aiyedire Local Government Area of Osun State. He is a member of the 47 regular course, graduated from the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, as well as the US Army War College.
Nafiu’s predecessor, Brig. Gen. Yushu’a Ahmed, was appointed by former president Muhammadu Buhari in January 2023. However, his tenure has been met with many disappointments, citing poor performance and incompetence.

One of such disappointments was expressed by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) over the nonpayment of Corp members’ approved N77,000 allowance.
Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, NANS’s National Vice President, Inter-Campus Affairs, spoke about the non-implementation of the new NYSC allowance payment.
She said she was wondering why there was a delay in the payment of the N77,000 after it had been approved by the Federal Government in 2024.
Felicia said, “Findings by my office revealed that corps members received only N33,000 for their February allowance last Friday, against N70,000 promised by the NYSC DG, Yushu’a Ahmed.
“This is even as we note that the federal and many state governments have since begun to pay their workers the new minimum wage of N70,000.
“The NYSC has no justification to withhold the payment of the new approved allowance to corps members whatsoever.
”It would amount to gross injustice on the part of corps members to still be receiving old allowance months after approval and implementation by the federal government.
