Vice President Shettima warned that if the complicated issues of poverty, migration, and climate change are not addressed, there may be more instability on a national and regional level.

Shettima cited the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. when he said, “We have to either learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

Vice President Shettima made the statement at the Presidential Villa in Abuja while hosting a group from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), which was headed by Sharon Dimanche, the organization’s Chief of Mission in Nigeria.

He emphasised that poverty, environmental damage, and violent conflict—particularly in the North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions of Nigeria are the country’s most challenging humanitarian issues.

“There is a direct correlation between climate change, insecurity, and forced migration. You cannot separate the economy from the ecology in sub-Saharan Africa,” Shettima said.

Vice president Shettima acknowledged his own history of collaboration with the IOM, which dates back to his tenure as governor of Borno State, and praised the organization’s longstanding efforts to aid displaced people and restore livelihoods.

The IOM Nigeria Chief of Mission while speaking, commended the Federal Government’s dedication to disaster preparedness and responsible migration governance in her remarks. She pointed out that Nigeria’s 36 states’ diversity presents both a difficulty and an opportunity for specialised, effective programs.
