The hospitals are situated in Ijaiye Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Ilaro, Ota, Isara, and Ifo.
This was announced by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, during a press conference held in Abeokuta on Monday. This year’s theme is “Hepatitis: Let’s Break It Down.”
Lamenting that 50 percent of those infected with Hepatitis B or C do not exhibit any symptoms, making early identification challenging, Coker stated that a subsidised vaccination would be offered for those who test negative and wish to be immunised.
Coker explained, “it is an inflammation of the liver caused by chemicals, bacteria, or viruses and can be spread through sexual contact, from mother to child during childbirth, and the use of contaminated sharp objects.
“There are five main types of hepatitis viruses – A, B, C, D, and E. Of these, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are the most dangerous, due to their severe consequences and widespread transmission.
“Unfortunately, up to 50% of people infected with Hepatitis B or C show no symptoms, making early detection difficult. For those who develop symptoms, these may include yellowness of the eyes (jaundice), abdominal pain, dark urine, and loss of appetite.
“Just like HIV, it’s not written on people’s face, we have to take responsibility. We have to be extra aware by testing, go out there and get tested. However, if you test negative and want to get vaccinated it is subsidized.”
The commissioner appealed that all infants, starting at birth, children and adolescents under 19 years who missed vaccination in infancy, healthcare workers particularly surgeon, people with multiple sexual partners, and pregnant women should get immunized.
Coker revealed that by 2026, the state plans to screen at least 200,000 residents, expand the screening and vaccination services across specific facilities in all three senatorial districts, and achieve at least 95% Hepatitis B birth-dose coverage across all Primary Health Centres.
She added that the ministry also stated that Ogun State would launch Data Dashboard which would improve accountability and track progress.
The Executive Director of Youth Future Savers Initiative, Akinpelu Tayo, appreciated the state government for its ongoing efforts and dedication to protecting citizens’ lives.
He emphasized that hepatitis B, like A, is preventable by vaccination and shows no symptoms, saying “You’re going to be fine until it becomes deadly.”
