Dauda Lawal, the governor of Zamfara State, has been accused to allegedly be behind a scheme to damage the character of former Zamfara governor and minister of state for defence Bello Matawalle.
The Concerned Northern Forum (CNF) made this claim in a statement released on Monday, May 5, 2025, by its secretary, Abubakar Suleiman.
The charge came after CNF Chairman Alhaji Aliyu Muhammad Sani accused Matawalle of financial mismanagement at a contentious press conference earlier in the day in Kaduna.

The group denied Sani’s allegation, calling the event a “shameful charade” that was purportedly paid for with a N200 million bribe by current Governor Lawal’s operatives.
According to Suleiman, the goal was to discredit Matawalle and divert attention from the actual corruption in the Zamfara government.
He insisted that the CNF had earlier cautioned Sani against involving the Forum in political scheming and had neither approved nor taken part in the press conference.

“No meeting was held, no mandate was given. What happened was the personal decision of a few compromised individuals. They do not speak for us.”
He accused governor Lawal’s administration of diverting billion of local government funding to support this and similar smear campaign against Matawalle and the federal government, while the condition of government in Zamfara continued to worsen.
Suleiman also disclosed that during Monday’s event in Kaduna, the group purposely declined to stand with Aliyu Sani after learning that he had recruited non-members and goons with offers of N200,000 each – cash allegedly connected to Dauda Lawal.

He said ,“Zamfara is on its knees. Insecurity is worsening, people are suffering, and instead of solving real problems, this administration is spending public funds on media stunts,”
