‘Present a Plan or Step Aside’ — Reps Challenge Tinubu Over Insecurity

The minority caucus in the house of representatives has given President Bola Tinubu a six months ultimatum over the rising insecurity crisis plaguing the nation.

The reps also asked Tinubu to suspend all political activities associated with the 2027 elections and announce a six-month national security and economic recovery plan.

Speaking with journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, Fred Agbedi, minority leader of the house of representatives, stated that Tinubu is focused on re-election politics rather than the safety and welfare of the people.

He further claimed that, in the run-up to the 2027 elections, the country is facing an unprecedented crisis characterised by murders, kidnappings, economic hardship, and what he described as attempts to undermine opposition parties.

“The life of every Nigerian matters. Politics must take the back seat when the nation bleeds. We must secure Nigeria first,” Agbedi said.

“President Tinubu must suspend all 2027 political activities and declare a six-month national security and economic recovery plan. Lead or leave.”

Fred Agbedi, minority leader of the house of representatives,

Agbedi referenced Late General Rabe Abubakar’s, who died while in the hands of kidnappers in Katsina state, as a “national shame” and evidence of a failed security architecture.

Additionally, he stressed that the former military officer’s passing highlights the nation’s worsening security condition and raises questions about the security of common people.

He asked, “If a general is not safe within the borders of our nation, then who truly is?”

Consequently,  he called for a special military operation to secure the release of the victims within 72 hours, adding that every hour they spend in captivity represents “an hour stolen from Nigeria’s future”.

BACKSTORY…

Recall that gunmen suspected to be terrorists earlier abducted former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar, and his wife in Katsina State, north-west Nigeria.
