In a powerful show of federal and state collaboration, President Bola Tinubu on Saturday commended Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Umara Zulum for steadfast leadership and people-centred development during a high-profile commissioning ceremony in Maiduguri. The event brought together political leaders, traditional rulers and residents, marking a significant milestone for education, transport and economic progress in the Northeast region, according to the State House.

President Tinubu, on an official tour of Borno, Bauchi and Lagos States, arrived in Maiduguri in the early afternoon to a warm reception. His visit commenced with the formal unveiling of a series of key infrastructure projects executed by the Borno State Government, including modern schools and a fleet of electric vehicles aimed at boosting mobility and job opportunities across the state.

Strategic Investments in Education to Transform Borno

In his address, the President spoke passionately about the importance of education in shaping the future of young Nigerians, especially in communities recovering from years of insurgency. At the heart of the day’s programme was the commissioning of three newly constructed educational complexes. They included a primary school, a junior secondary school and a senior secondary institution built to modern standards that meet the learning needs of children across Borno.

“I am commissioning these schools to the glory of God and for the continuous education of our children,” President Tinubu declared, emphasising that access to quality schooling must remain a cornerstone of national and regional development. His words resonated with teachers, parents and students who spoke with journalists about their hopes for better learning environments and brighter prospects.

The new schools are part of a broader educational overhaul by the state, aimed at increasing enrolment, improving academic performance and creating safe, supportive places for children to grow and thrive. These schools also reflect Governor Zulum’s long-term vision to rebuild and modernise Borno’s education system after decades of disruptions.

Electric Vehicles and Transport Solutions to Boost Local Economy

Beyond education, President Tinubu also inaugurated a large fleet of electric vehicles, which includes buses, taxis and tricycles that will serve Maiduguri and surrounding communities. The initiative is designed to modernise intra-state transport, reduce emissions and create economic opportunities for drivers and young entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the event, the President described the electric vehicle programme as a practical step toward inclusive economic growth. He said such investments will not only improve local transport but also empower residents to participate more fully in commerce and community life.

Governor Zulum, known for his ambitious infrastructural agenda, expressed gratitude for the federal support and reiterated his commitment to developing Borno’s human capital, infrastructure and economic base. His remarks underscored a partnership that many have described as critical for long-term progress in the region.

Community, Culture and Ceremony

The day’s official duties were followed by a culturally significant moment that reflected the deep traditions of the region. President Tinubu attended the traditional wedding of Sadeeq Sheriff, son of former Borno Governor Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and Hadiza Kam Salem. In accordance with Kanuri culture, the President stood in as father of the groom while Governor Zulum represented the bride’s family for the traditional bride price exchange.

The ceremony, held at the Maiduguri Central Mosque and hosted by the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, brought together governors from across the country, lawmakers, ministers, community leaders and residents, all celebrating local customs and unity.

Among the dignitaries present were governors from Katsina, Taraba, Yobe, Delta, Gombe, Adamawa and Ogun States, reflecting the widespread interest and support for both national development and cultural harmony.

Forward Look: Building on Progress

As President Tinubu departed Maiduguri for Bauchi State later in the day, his comments and actions left a clear message: strategic investments in education, transport and community life are essential catalysts for national renewal. The federal government’s continued engagement with state-level initiatives signals a commitment to measurable outcomes and tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.

For Borno, where decades of conflict once threatened basic services and social stability, events like this commissioning serve as important reminders of what can be achieved through persistent effort, shared vision and community empowerment. Leaders, educators and families in the region now look ahead with cautious optimism, hopeful that these projects will inspire further progress and opportunity for all citizens.
