President Tinubu has, again, wielded his presidential power to halt the escalating feud between Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and his predecessor and estranged godfather, Nyesom Wike.

Recall that when Wike-aligned members of the state House of Assembly started the impeachment process against Governor Fubara in January, the political conflict between Wike and Fubara took on a new dimension.

The legislators justified the action by claiming that Fubara had engaged in a number of wrongdoings, including using public funds that weren’t allocated.

According to Thisday, the president had previously mediated a shaky peace between Fubara and Wike in December 2023. However, the peace quickly collapsed, prompting Tinubu to declare a six-month emergency rule in the state on March 18, 2025, and suspend the governor.

However, President Tinubu has ordered an immediate suspension of any impeachment proceedings against Fubara, subject to very severe conditions, as part of a renewed effort to restore calm in the state.

Multiplesources have also confirmed that the President who acted just before departing for an official trip to Türkiye on January 26, laid down the political terms aimed at restoring peace between the two key political actors in Rivers State, a state seen as critical to the president’s re-election in 2027.

According to the source, President Tinubu’s involvement came with a direct message to Governor Fubara that Wike must be regarded as the indisputable political leader of the party, whether it is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or the APC in Rivers State.
