The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors(NARD) has begun a five-day warning strike today, following the expiration of its ultimatum to the Federal Government over unpaid allowances, salary arrears, and unresolved welfare issues.

The group said that the government’s failure to act on long-standing demands prompted the announcement of the industrial action.

Nigeria’s public health system is anchored on resident doctors, who provide a significant portion of clinical services in both federal and state hospitals. Every time the group goes on strike, healthcare delivery is frequently paralysed, leaving patients stranded and hospitals overburdened.

“Good morning, NEC Members, thank you all for your continued cooperation and understanding. As clearly stated in our earlier communique, the strike is scheduled to commence at 8:00 am today (Friday).

“All Centre leadership is expected to guide their members accordingly. Further updates will be communicated to NEC members in due course,” he said.

Among the complaints are the unpaid 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, the five-month arrears from the updated Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, and the unpaid hazard and specialised allowances.

The decision, according to NARD, came after a six-hour virtual Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting and the government’s 21-day deadline, which was first given in July 2025 and then extended by 10 days, expired on September 10.

Following this, the resident doctors then gave the government a final 24 hours, which expired on Thursday, September 11.

The E-NEC was disappointed that the Federal Government had not yet addressed important welfare issues in spite of these repeated extensions, and that the organisation was forced to take industrial action.
