Resident doctors officially suspend 29-day nationwide strike

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors(NARD), has finally called off its month-long nationwide strike, bringing an end to 29 days of disrupted medical services across the country.

Following a meeting of the Extraordinary National Executive Council on Saturday, the industrial action that had started on November 1, 2025, was suspended. Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the Secretary-General of NARD, verified the news.

An estimated 11,000 resident doctors from 91 federal and state teaching hospitals withdrew their services during the strike, which had a significant negative influence on the provision of healthcare across the country.

According to Dr. Ibrahim, the decision to halt the action came after the Federal Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding based on seven requirements established by the association.

He added that two of the seven demands—the Professional Allowance Table’s release and the authorisation of doctors’ entry level placement at CONMESS 3 have already been carried out.

The remaining five, which cover issues such as the reinstatement of the Lokoja doctors, payment of arrears, upgrades for eligible doctors, specialist allowance, and the Membership Certificate matter, are expected to be handled within four weeks.

“The strike was suspended after we signed the MoU with the Federal Government outlining the seven conditions we required,” he said. “Two have been met, and the others are to be completed within the next four weeks.”

However, he warned that the association of resident doctors would not hesitate to resume the suspended strike action if the government fails to deliver on the outstanding commitments within the agreed timeframe.
