Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly began the process of impeaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, on Thursday, intensifying the state’s political crisis.
The action came after the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, presided over a plenary session where Major Jack, the Majority Leader, read a notice of accusations and claims of egregious misconduct made against the governor.

The notification, which the lawmakers claimed was compliant with the Nigerian Constitution, was reportedly signed by no fewer than 26 parliamentarians.
This comes barely four months after Governor Fubara was reinstated as governor following a six months suspension by President Tinubu
According to legislative process, Amaewhule declared that Governor Fubara will get the notice within the next seven days.

The most recent development coincides with the ongoing political division that has further polarised the state’s political system between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and political ally.
Meanwhile, The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emphasised that leadership roles are linked to current office by saying that Wike would “certainly be under” his successor, Fubara, should he choose to join the party.

The remarks were made by APC Director of Information Bala Ibrahim in an interview on Trust TV.
