Crisis in Benue as IDPs block highway, demand return to ancestral homes, leaving over 100 road users stranded

Internally Displaced People (IDPs) staged a protest on Wednesday, demanding an immediate return to their ancestral homes, bringing traffic along the Benue–Nasarawa route to a complete halt in the Yelwata axis.

For several hours, the demonstrators, who were allegedly the targets of ongoing attacks by suspected herdsmen, blocked both sides of the major roadway while yelling, “We want to go back home.”

Hundreds of drivers and passengers were stuck as a result of the disruption created by the demonstration.

According to witnesses, the government’s tardiness in bringing security back to their towns has deeply frustrated the displaced people, many of whom have lived in overcrowded IDP camps for years.

“We have suffered enough. We want to return to our homes and farms,” one of the protesters told reporters at the scene.

According to reports, security guards were sent in to keep an eye on things and stop them from getting worse, however, tensions were still high.

Benue state governor

This development is coming only 2 days after the first lady, Senator Remi Tinubu donated the sum of 1 billion naira to displaces persons in Benue state, a move which resulted to fights and chaos between the IDPs

SEMA, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency, and other pertinent authorities were not contacted for comment.
