The Federal Government has began the construction and installation of the proposed N10 billion solar project to power the Aso Rock Presidential Villa following the constant collapse of the national grid, a move that demonstrates both a drive towards renewable energy and a growing lack of trust in Nigeria’s failing national electricity infrastructure.
Large areas of the Villa, including the visitors’ parking lot, the Banquet Hall parking lot, and the area surrounding the lake, have been marked for solar project panel installation, which is a glaring break from grid reliance, according to sources.
Julius Berger is reportedly implementing the project in collaboration with Bartum Energy and other renewable energy companies.
Bartum Energy was founded in 2016 and has been aggressively marketing solar energy as a substitute for Nigeria’s unstable public electricity supply.
The Aso Rock solar power project highlights FGs acknowledgement of the grid’s failure, even though it may also be seen as President Bola Tinubu’s support for energy transition and sustainability objectives.
According to reports, homes and companies in Nigeria only receive roughly 4,500 megawatts of electricity, despite the country’s installed electricity capacity of 14,000 megawatts. Businesses, households, and particularly critical services like healthcare cannot depend on the grid for this supply.
The majority were using fossil fuel generators, but are now switching to solar power as the cost of diesel and premium motor spirit increased under the present government, and the cost of grid supply increased for Band A consumers.
More than 17% of the Villa’s capital budget, which increased from N47 billion in the original 2025 proposal to N57 billion at the time of legislative approval, is allocated to the presidential solar project.
With a population of more than 200 million, Nigeria’s overall generating capacity is still below 5,000 MW, and grid breakdown situations are nevertheless common.
While having one of the highest rates of self-generation in the world, this change has sparked worries about energy inequity, inadequate infrastructure planning, and the sluggish pace of grid modernisation, while being creative.
