Governor Abba Yusuf Issues Urgent Order to Curb Dangerous Sand Mining Near Kano Water Plants

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has ordered the Ministry of Water Resources to take urgent steps to regulate sand mining activities around water treatment plants across the state.

The directive was given on Tuesday during an inspection of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, as part of his ongoing statewide assessment of water facilities.

According to a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the action is intended to safeguard vital water infrastructure and ensure a consistent supply of clean water to residents.

Governor Abba Yusuf raised concerns over the increasing presence of sand miners near water treatment facilities, warning that such activities could disrupt water production and distribution.

“Unregulated sand mining poses a serious threat to the smooth operation of our water treatment plants,” the governor said. “We must act quickly to protect these facilities for the benefit of our people.”

He directed the ministry to strengthen monitoring and enforcement measures to ensure that sand mining does not damage water sources or interfere with treatment processes.

Abba Yusuf also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving access to potable water across Kano State, urging stakeholders to cooperate with government efforts to safeguard public utilities.

“We remain committed to providing clean and safe water to our citizens, and this can only be achieved if we protect the systems that make it possible,” he added.
