Tension in the Middle East continues to rise as Syria’s assistant defense minister, Sipan Hamo has disclosed that the nation’s forces successfully thwarted a drone assault originating from neighbouring Iraq, which was aimed at last US military installations in Syria.
Sipan Hamo said on X that “Earlier today, four drones launched from Iraqi territory targeted the US base in Qasrak, situated on our land.”
He further noted that “the drones were intercepted and destroyed without any casualties.
“We hold Iraq accountable and urge it to take measures to prevent future attacks that jeopardize our stability.”
This incident happened just one day after the Syrian army declared that it had successfully repelled another Iraqi drone strike that was aimed at al-Tanf, a southeastern facility that had formerly been home to US personnel.
An Iraqi official blamed the attack on a local armed group. Earlier this week, the Syrian military said that another installation in the northeast had also been hit by an Iraqi missile strike. Iraq has responded by detaining four people related to the event.
The US and Israeli operations against Iran sparked the crisis, which has expanded throughout most of the Middle East and now includes Iraq.
Attacks on US interests in Iraq and the surrounding have been attributed to pro-Iranian Iraqi militias, and these groups have also been targeted by retaliatory strikes.
The al-Tanf base and Shadadi in the northeastern province of Hasakeh have been evacuated by American personnel in recent months, and they have also started to leave the Qasrak base in Hasakeh.
