The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has approved a special compensation for eligible Band A electricity customers affected by poor electricity supply arising from generation constraints on the national grid between February and March 2026.
In a public notice posted on its social media accounts on Thursday, the commission explained that it implemented the directive to address severe generation shortages throughout the Nigerian electricity supply industry. These shortages had hindered electricity distribution companies from providing the minimum service levels they promised to certain Band A customers in the first quarter of the year.
To resolve the issue, NERC issued Directive No. NERC/2026/002, which mandates special compensation for Band A customers affected by grid generation constraints.
According to the commission, the directive addressed the significant generation shortfalls the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry experienced between February and March 2026, which prevented distribution companies from meeting the promised service levels for some Band A customers.
It also said factors beyond the control of power distribution companies largely caused the supply disruptions.
Consequently, NERC will continue to compensate customers connected to Band A feeders that recorded an average daily supply of 18 to 20 hours during the period, in line with the existing framework.
