Veteran Nollywood actor Chief Kanran dies @ 70

Veteran Nollywood actor Olusegun Akinremi, widely known as Chief Kanran, has passed on at the age of 70, allegedly three days before his birthday.

Movie executive and producer Seun Oloketuyi confirmed the sad incident via an Instagram post on Friday, stating that the actor passed away earlier today.

He wrote, “Popular actor Segun Remi popularly known as Chief Kanran died Friday morning. Details soon.”

Chief Kanran was a household name in the Yoruba film industry, popular for his unique style, refined elegance, love for luxury, sharp humour, and commanding performances that lit up stage plays and movies for decades.

He started his career on stage before moving to television and movies. He rose to fame through a number of Yoruba theatre shows and a well-liked NTA drama series.

The legend had opened up on his hardships and the reasons for his decision to leave the film business in a 2020 interview with PUNCH.

“I stepped aside from film-making because of some reasons. There is politics everywhere and different cliques as well, even in our profession.

“Some people in the industry see people like me as a threat because I will not do anything that is not professional and that has made some people to be upset with me,” he was quoted to have said.

His roles in Yoruba movies further cemented his fame, with notable films including “Ewe Orun,” “Aiye,” “Efunsetan Aniwura,” “Agbarin,” and “Bata Wahala.”
