Nasir El-Rufai, a former governor of Kaduna State, has temporarily regained freedom from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission’s (ICPC) detention on Friday.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

In a message on his X (previously Twitter) account on Friday, his son Bashir El-Rufai revealed that his father had been freed from custody.<\/p>\n

He wrote, \u201cMy beloved great legend of a father (@elrufai) is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that is a lame excuse of a pathetic institution.<\/p>\n

\"El-Rufai\"<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you all for all the support. Our family shall never forget these times. We have overcome, as the El-Rufais.\u201d<\/p>\n

This development coincides with the demise of El-Rufai\u2019s mother,<\/a> Hajiya Umma, who died from an illness in Cairo, Egypt.<\/p>\n

Recall that Nasir El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 18 over allegations bordering on financial misconduct and other related matters.<\/p>\n

\"ICPC\"<\/p>\n

Prior to his arraignment before the Federal High Court’s Kaduna division earlier this week, he spent more than a month with the commission.<\/p>\n

Nasir El-rufai was arraigned alongside one Joel Adoga, on charges bordering on alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.<\/p>\n

However, he entered a not guilty plea to the single-count accusation pertaining to the processing of earnings and deposits into domiciliary accounts. While he is still being held, the court postponed making a decision on his bail request until March 31, 2026.<\/p>\n

In a separate case, the ICPC<\/a> has also filed charges at the Kaduna State High Court against Nasir El-Rufai and another defendant, Amadu Sule.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the former governor is being charged on three counts by the Department of State Services at the Federal High Court in Abuja.<\/p>\n

The issue revolves around claims that National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu’s phone conversations were illegally intercepted in breach of the Cybercrimes Act.<\/p>\n

As of the time this article was filed, the ICPC had not yet released an official statement about the conditions of his temporary release.<\/p>\n
