However, a growing issue known as SIM recycling is putting many Nigerians at risk. When a SIM card remains inactive for a certain period, telecom providers are legally allowed to reassign it. While this helps manage limited numbering resources, it often creates a “digital ghost” effect that can lead to identity theft and financial loss.<\/p>\n

The Problem with Reassigned Numbers<\/h3>\n

The process of recycling numbers is simple for the network but complex for the user. If you lose a SIM or stop using it, that number eventually goes back into the market.<\/p>\n

The new owner who buys that SIM might suddenly start receiving your bank alerts. They might even be able to reset your passwords using “Forgot Password” features linked to that number.<\/p>\n

This isn’t just a theoretical problem; it is a daily reality. Many people have reported losing access to their WhatsApp accounts because a new owner activated their old number. You must update your “address” on every important platform. This includes your BVN records, your email recovery settings, and your social media profiles. Relying on the network provider to protect your data after you have abandoned the line is a dangerous gamble.<\/p>\n

Toward a Smarter Identity System<\/h3>\n
