The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike in Oyo state, demanding urgent rescue of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Oriire LGA by suspected bandits on May 15.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The NUT has also directed teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state to withdraw their services beginning today over the continued abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in the state.<\/p>\n

In a circular dated May 29, 2026, Audu Amba, NUT president, and Clinton Ikpitibo, secretary general, directed all state wings to hold solidarity rallies across the country on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The statement reads, \u201cThe National Leadership has directed all Primary and Secondary School teachers in Oyo State to withdraw their services from Monday, 1st June, 2026, until the abducted teachers and students are safely released.\u201d<\/div>\n

Furthermore, NUT said it was particularly disturbed by reports of killings among the victims, as well as the emotional video appeals made by the school principal and a teacher from inside their kidnapper\u2019s den.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It said that it had no choice but to take action because to the extended imprisonment and the lack of a clear sign of an impending rescue.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the union directed all its state chapters to organise solidarity rallies on Tuesday, June 2, culminating at various Government Houses across the country.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, after the rallies, the Oyo state NUT leaders will address journalists on the need to strengthen the protection of schools, teachers, and students.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

BACKSTORY…<\/strong><\/h6>\n

Recall that on May 15, about 39 students and seven teachers were abducted by suspected bandits across three schools in the Oriire axis of Ogbomoso.<\/p>\n

The bandits killed an assistant headmaster and a motorcyclist in one of the affected schools.<\/p>\n

In two separate Instagram videos posted on Friday, Rachael Alamu, the principal of Community High School, Esinehe, who was also abducted, said the kidnappers were on the verge of killing another victim and urged the government to negotiate with them urgently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Tinubu Deploys 1000 Forest Guards<\/strong><\/h6>\n

Meanwhile, President Tinubu just approved the recruitment of at least 1,000 forest guards and the deployment of a specialised rescue team following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.<\/p>\n

The directive was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.<\/p>\n
