SDP crisis: Court adjourns criminal case against Gabam, Gombe explains

National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prof. Sodiq Abubakar, has explained why a Magistrate Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, adjourned the party’s criminal case against its former National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, to July 20, 2026.

Speaking with journalists after the court session on Wednesday, Abubakar said the adjournment became necessary due to the party’s inability to present key documentary evidence required for the case.

Gombe noted that the party had applied to a Nigerian bank for a statement of account, but the document was not yet made available.

According to him, the party subsequently approached the court registry to issue a subpoena compelling the bank to produce the statement within a week.

“The case has been adjourned to 20th July next month as a result of our inability to lay our hands on one of the key documents that are going to be tendered for the case, which is the bank statement.

“We applied to the bank, and the bank was not able to give us the document, which is the bank statement.

“So thereafter, we had to go through the registry of the court to subpoena the bank for the bank to bring the said document by itself. The bank said because it involves a lot of pages, the document is bulky, so they need time, and they have to stamp it after getting approval from headquarters, so they asked for one week before they would be able to provide that document for us.

“As a result of that, we informed the court, and the court asked us to maintain the date, and the matter has now been adjourned to the 20th of next month for continuation of hearing,” he said.

Recall that Gabam was arraigned in May 2026 in Suit No. DCC/10/2026 over alleged financial misappropriation amounting to N35 million during his tenure as the party’s National Chairman.
