Reports and family sources have confirmed that Senator Godiya Akwashiki died at the age of 52, throwing Nasarawa North Senatorial District and the entire state into deep mourning.

The late lawmaker, who represented the district in the National Assembly, reportedly passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at an Indian hospital where he had been receiving medical treatment for a prolonged illness, which hasn’t been disclosed to the media.

A family source who confirmed the development to the journalists on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon said that Senator Godiya Akwashiki died in an Indian hospital on Wednesday. The source added that his death has left a huge vacuum in the senatorial zone, considering his commitment to development projects and empowerment programs across the district.

“Since in the history of Nasarawa North, Sen. Akwashiki was the best Senator Nasarawa North ever produced due to his purposeful leadership.

“His projects is in every nook and cranny of the constituency, as he was the only Senator that re-contested and won a second term in the zone,” he said.

Akwashiki was first elected into the Senate in 2019 and later secured a second term, making him the only senator from Nasarawa North to achieve two consecutive terms since the creation of the state. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was widely known for his strong grassroots political base.

Before his journey to the Senate, the late lawmaker served multiple terms in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to the position of majority leader and later deputy speaker.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Senator Godiya Akwashiki was recognized for his focus on constituency-driven projects and active participation in legislative and oversight activities.

His areas of interest included rural development, education, youth empowerment, and infrastructure development across the Nasarawa North Senatorial District.
