Former governor of Bayelsa state and senator representing Bayelsa west, Seriake Dickson has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

At a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, the former governor of Bayelsa declared his intention to join the NDC.

In February, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) registered the NDC as a political party.

Dickson said he would not have left the PDP if it weren’t for the party’s long-standing internal strife, criticising opposition lawmakers who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Nigeria cannot be a one-party state. Nigeria is not designed to be a one-party state,” he said

Seriake Dickson stated that Nigeria is a politically, culturally, and ethnically diverse country and that its complexity necessitates leadership that fosters harmony, inclusivity, and respect among its varied communities.

The lawmaker stated that the NDC’s platform is more transparent and that he declined to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) alliance because he was unclear about the party’s plans for the nation.

“I don’t frankly know where the ADC stands on some of the issues that are very important to me,” he said.

“The NDC stands for true federalism in a democratic Nigeria and the devolution of power. The NDC stands for investments in education, healthcare, and security for Nigerians.

“Any political party that I will call my own must be clear on those issues. It is a good thing for people to gather in opposition (ADC coalition). But I want to ask, what is their agenda for governance? What is the agenda beyond gathering? And time will tell whether it is a coalition or a collision.”

Recall that Seriake Dickson was one of the senators who pushed for the Electoral Act’s required reporting of election results in February.
