A grieving father, Henry Airenekhuemen, has called for a thorough investigation into the death of his son, Mattias Airenekhuemen, who reportedly drowned at the Signatious Hotel swimming pool in the Ajao Estate area of Lagos State.

The distraught parent said the circumstances surrounding the Signatious Hotel drowning remain unclear, suspicious, and troubling.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, Airenekhuemen explained that Mattias had attended a poolside event at the Signatious Hotel on Saturday evening, where he was selling tickets to earn some income. He said his worry began when one of Mattias’ older brothers informed him that the younger brother had been rushed to Isolo General Hospital.

Airenekhuemen said, “I was told that my son had been taken to Isolo General Hospital. When I got there, I was shocked to see his lifeless body inside the vehicle that brought him.”

According to him, the hospital officials said Mattias was brought in dead after allegedly drowning at the Signatious Hotel swimming pool.

The father recounted information provided by a friend who accompanied Mattias to the event. He said the friend explained that Mattias was sitting with him and a lady before he briefly stepped away, only to return and find Mattias missing while his phone was still charging.

Airenekhuemen said it was during a search that Mattias’ body was allegedly discovered inside the swimming pool. However, he questioned the drowning claim, citing physical signs he found suspicious.

“If he actually drowned, why was his stomach not bloated? And why was there foam coming out of his mouth and nose?” he queried. These observations, he said, have further deepened doubts surrounding the Signatious Hotel drowning incident.

He disclosed that the matter was immediately reported to the police, who visited the hospital, documented the case, and transferred the body to the morgue. Officers later accompanied the family to the hotel to inspect the premises where the incident occurred.

During the visit, the grieving father said concerns were raised about the absence of a pool supervisor or professional diver at the time of the incident. He added that no clear explanation was given by the hotel management regarding safety measures at the Signatious Hotel swimming pool.

According to him, three individuals are currently in custody at the Ajao Estate Police Division in connection with the case. He said the hotel manager, the lady last seen with Mattias, and the friend who claimed to have found his body in the pool have all been detained.

“The hotel manager was invited and asked to provide CCTV footage, but he claimed he had just resumed work. He is being detained. The lady who was with my son has also been detained after giving her statement, as well as the friend who said he found my son in the pool,” he said.

The bereaved father also alleged that some actions after the incident raised more suspicion. He said a caller who claimed to be a staff member of Signatious Hotel allegedly contacted the family to discuss settling the matter, while the pool party reportedly continued the same night despite the death of Mattias.
