Seyi Sowunmi, the House of Representatives member representing Ojo Federal Constituency in Lagos State, has raised serious concerns over implementation gaps that could undermine the credibility and sustainability of the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme.

Sowunmi pointed out that reports from several centres, including the Ojo centre, show that students have yet to receive the stipends they were promised, despite attending training sessions for more than a month.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Sowunmi explained that, after reviewing the strategic objectives of the initiative and conducting an on-site assessment at one of the centres within his constituency in Ojo, Lagos, he is “confident that the TVET programme, if properly implemented, holds significant promise for youth empowerment, skills development, and long-term national competitiveness.”

According to him, “For many of these young people who enrolled for this programme, the monthly stipends are essential for their transportation to their various centres.
“The failure of prompt payment of the monthly stipend is already resulting in declining attendance in some centres. We cannot expect commitment from trainees when the system has not honoured its commitments to them.”
Sowunmi highlighted that several training centres have not been financially supported by the government, placing operational and financial pressure on facilitators who remain committed to supporting the programme’s objectives.
“Delays of this nature risk undermining public confidence in government programmes. To maintain the integrity and impact of this laudable initiative, all outstanding stipends and centre payments must be addressed without further delay,” he said.
