Ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper-turned-pastor reveals he nearly took his own life after being dumped by his ex-wife.
Idah Peterside, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper who later became a pastor, recently opened up about the immense personal struggles he faced after his football career ended. In a candid revelation on X (formerly known as Twitter), Peterside confessed that he nearly took his own life after his ex-wife left him. This period of his life, marked by profound despair and shame, coincided with his early days as a pastor and a television pundit on SuperSport.
Reflecting on that dark time, Peterside expressed gratitude to God for seeing him through what he described as an incredibly challenging phase. He shared, “I almost killed myself after my ex-wife left me, the shame was too much. I had just started a church and was just starting on SuperSport. Only God saw me through. I look back today and am very grateful to God.”
Peterside’s journey from football to faith began while he was still playing for Iwuanyanwu Nationale, now known as Heartland FC. Despite the challenges, he pursued a diploma from Word of Faith Bible College, which marked the beginning of his spiritual path. After retiring from football in 2002, he fully transitioned into his new role as a pastor at Christ Ambassadors Church in South Africa.
During his football career, Peterside was known for his talent and versatility, playing for several Nigerian clubs, including Enyimba, Sharks, Udoji United, BCC Lions, and Iwuanyanwu Nationale. He also had a stint in South Africa, where he played for Tembisa Classic FC and Moroka Swallows. His expertise in football later earned him a place as the first Nigerian football pundit on DSTV, where he provided insights to a broader audience.
Despite his professional achievements, Peterside’s personal life was fraught with challenges. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the often-hidden struggles that athletes and public figures endure, even as they continue to inspire and lead others.
