Nigeria’s Super Eagles Refuse to Travel to Marrakech Over Unpaid Bonuses
Following the Super Eagles’ qualification for the quarterfinal of the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, the players and coaches of the team have collectively refused to train or travel to Marrakech to face Algeria in their quarterfinal match due to unpaid bonuses owed to them for the previous matches that were played.

Nigeria and BBC Africa’s journalist Oluwashina Okeleji, who is currently in Morocco, revealed this recent development from the national team.
The match between Nigeria and Algeria in the quarterfinal of the 2025 AFCON has been scheduled for Saturday evening, but preparations for the crucial clash have been thrown into uncertainty.
According to more reports, the Super Eagles players and coaches have not received their bonuses for the four matches they have played so far in the tournament. And efforts to get them paid have been thwarted by officials of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
So far in the 2025 AFCON, the Super Eagles of Nigeria recorded victories against Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda during the group stage before hitting Mozambique with a 4-0 thrashing in the round of 16.

Despite their impressive run, the issue of unpaid bonuses to the team and officials has reportedly dampened the team’s morale, resulting in their collective decision to not train or travel.
Other sources further disclosed that the Super Eagles players and coaches have decided not to travel to Marrakech or take part in any training sessions until the matter is resolved. The action is believed to be aimed at compelling the relevant authorities to address the outstanding payments urgently.

The development has raised concerns among football fans as Nigeria prepares for one of its most important matches in the competition. Many supporters are now calling on football administrators to swiftly resolve the bonuses issue to avoid disrupting the team’s campaign at the 2025 AFCON tournament.
