Meta policy chief Nick Clegg steps down
Nick Clegg, who is the president of Meta’s Global Affairs division, is leaving the company, as was announced via a tweet by the executive on Thursday.
The new incoming Clegg, who is currently Meta’s politically centrist policy maker from 2018 until now, is Joel Kaplan-the-very-Republican executive of Meta-who is about to fill the post. Kaplan is simply appointed as the individual for the position at this moment-the high-profile change happening only three weeks before president-elect Donalt Trump moves to office. Earlier reported by Semaphor was the news.
“In the new year, I have begun to feel that now is the right moment for me to leave the role of President of Global Affairs at Meta,” said Clegg in his tweet. “My tenure here has coincided with one of the more significant resets in the relationship between ‘big tech’ and the societal pressures manifested in new laws, institutions and norms affecting the sector.”
Much of the tech world is trying to get on Trump’s good side ahead of his second term. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg put in $1 million for the president-elect’s inaugural fund in December and broke bread with Trump at Mar-a-Lago during November. Other tech barons like the Google chief Sundar Pichai, the Apple chief Tim Cook, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos are said to have dined with Trump at Mar-a-Lago after he won his second election.
This practically appoints a treacherous Republican to lead Meta’s policy team in wanting to work with the next administration’s conservatives. It has received fire for accusations from the right that it has given the company the ability to muzzle right-wing voices and demonstrate a center-left bias in content moderation.
