New capabilities have been added to the Google Developer Program, but they will cost money.
Google established the Google Developer Program in June. This free program provides developers with tools to help them create apps that use Google services. Google is launching a second, paid tier to market the program now that “millions” of developers have signed up, according to the firm.
The Google Developer Program premium membership, which costs $299 annually and is an upgrade from the basic Google Developer Program, was introduced by Google on Monday. Access to e-learning courses in Google’s on-demand training program, Google Cloud Skills Boost, and one-on-one consultations with Google Cloud specialists are just two of the additional advantages it offers.
The Google Developer Program premium membership offers $500 in annual Google Cloud credits, a certification voucher, and “bonus” Google Cloud credits for developers who successfully complete an annual Google Cloud certification in addition to consultations and online courses.
This is on top of all the resources available in the ordinary, free Google Developer Program, which includes workspaces on Google’s IDX app development platform, AI-powered documentation and coding tools, and first access to new products.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure, two of Google’s main cloud competitors, don’t have any particular development plans that compare to the new service.
Although they are primarily targeted at business customers, Microsoft provides paid options to its free Microsoft 365 Developer Program, which is the company’s approximate equivalent of the Google Developer Program. Although AWS offers premium support plans, its main emphasis is on technical help and architectural direction.
Strangely, the fine print states that the Google Developer Program premium membership is “restricted to business or professional use” for users in the European Economic Region, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland.
That implies that personal usage is prohibited in those nations; we have contacted Google to get more information.
Assuming one takes advantage of all the features, the Google Developer Program premium membership might pay for itself quite rapidly. However, since that Google made no mention of charging for future updates to the original software, I have to suppose that some developers will be discouraged to see new capabilities locked behind a paid layer.
Google stated in a June blog post that “the Google Developer Program will unlock new tools and resources to help you on your development journey in the coming months, such as additional training resources and more ways to connect with the community.” “All you have to do to get these advantages is enroll in the Google Developer Program.”
Google is marketing the Google Developer Program premium membership as an upgrade to its now-defunct Cloud Innovators Plus program, which cost $299 annually and provided similar features. Notably, Google Cloud Skills Boost, which Google says is worth $299 annually on its own, was not included in Cloud Innovators Plus.
