In the late hours of Saturday, the popular social media app TikTok shut down in the United States, and it was nowhere to be found on the Google Playstore or Apple Store. This happened earlier due to the incoming TikTok ban on Sunday following the decision upheld by the US court.

By 10:45 p.m. ET (03:45 GMT), US users on TikTok got the notification, “A law banning TikTok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use TikTok for now. We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to reinstate TikTok once he takes office. Please stay tuned.”

Notification of the Tiktok Ban

Donald Trump, the U.S. President Elect, has mentioned that after his inauguration on Monday, he was going to give TikTok a 90-day reprieve to sort things out with the U.S. government.

He further added that it’s the most appropriate thing to do given the circumstances of the Tiktok Ban and that he will do so if he decides to on his inauguration day on Monday.

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company that also owns popular video editing app Capcut and lifestyle social app Lemon8, which were also offline and unavailable in U.S. app stores as of late Saturday.

Some users tried accessing the app via the web and met the same notification from the TikTok ban.

The short video content app had initially warned users in the U.S. of its shutdown operations if the U.S. Supreme Court was to still follow through with its decision of pressuring them to leave their parent company, ByteDance, based on reasons of posing a national security threat to the country.
