Warning: Check Your Ray-Ban Meta Privacy Now
Meta has updated its privacy policy regarding their AI glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta, which allows this tech giant more freedom to collect and use data to train AI models.
On Tuesday, the company will send a notice to the owners of Ray-Ban Meta glasses via mail that the AI features will now be switched on by default for these glasses, according to The Verge.

This means that while the AI is on, photos and videos taken with the smart glasses will be uploaded to Meta’s AI service to allow “better functioning”. This will also apply to the voice recordings of customers collected “for improvement of products” according to Meta, without an opt-out option.
To clarify, Ray-Ban Meta glasses will not constantly record whatever sounds happen around the user: speech is only recorded from this user when the person activates it, saying “Hey Meta.”
The privacy notice for voice services on wearables from Meta indicates that voice transcripts and recording can be retained for “up to one year to help improve Meta’s products.” Those customers unwilling for any kind of voice training done on their records through the use of their voice would need to manually delete each and every recording made from the companion app for Ray-Ban Meta.
The terms of the change are consistent with the most recent policy changes by Amazon on its users. Starting last month, Amazon decided that every Echo command would just be routed through the cloud, thus eliminating the previous option to create greater privacy by processing voice data locally.
The likes of Meta and Amazon are collecting all these troves of voice recordings, as they are enormously valuable in training their generative AI products. With a larger cache of modelled audio recordings, capabilities can be generated with them.

Could do a better job processing the accents, dialects, and speech patterns of varied individuals.
But user privacy has to be sacrificed for the betterment of AI. For example, an average user would not understand that if he/she uses Ray-Ban Meta glasses straight off the box to take a picture of a loved one that person s face might end up in Meta s training data. AI really needs vast amounts of content in order to be built up and it is convenient for the companies to train their AI based on data already generated by users.
