Senate President Godswill Akpabio held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Akpabio arrived at the Villa around 6:12 p.m. to meet with the president, who was also meeting with Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris.
Roughly an hour later, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Gboyega Oyetola and Alhassan Doguwa, the House of Representatives member representing the Doguwa/Tudun Wada constituency in Kano, also arrived at the presidential residence.
Shortly after, Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, also showed up to the presidential villa; however, the precise purpose of the meeting was not made public.
Oyetola’s meeting with Tinubu comes shortly after his successor, Ademola Adeleke, secured re-election in a fiercely contested Osun State governorship race, though the specific reasons for the officials’ visit to the presidential residence remain undisclosed.
The visits also comes before designated date for the official commencement of campaigns by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC).
Additionally, a meeting of the federal executive council is set for this Wednesday.
Backstory…
INEC has scheduled August 19 as the date for the commencement of campaigns, making the timing of the meeting particularly significant as parties and political actors begin moving into the next phase of the election cycle.
Although the purpose of the closed-door discussions was not immediately disclosed, Oyetola’s presence is particularly noteworthy coming days after the Osun governorship election, where incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke defeated the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji. Oyetola, a former Osun governor and prominent APC figure in the state, remains an influential voice within the party’s political structure.
